How is datEQ different from other dating apps?

Most dating apps rely on profiles, preferences, and swiping. datEQ takes a more structured approach. We combine a detailed self-assessment with a guided relational interview to understand how you actually show up in relationships — your communication style, emotional tendencies, and how you handle conflict and repair. This allows for matches based on deeper alignment rather than surface-level traits alone.

What happens during the assessment process?

The process has four phases. Phase 1 (Self-assessment): a free, structured questionnaire covering key relationship domains. Phase 2 (Interview): upon review, we initiate a guided virtual interview with one of our therapists — a conversation, not a clinical evaluation. Phase 3 (Decision): if our therapist decides you are ready, your profile is added to the network and matched with your best fits. If not, you receive a written analysis of growth areas and a recommended timeframe to reapply. Phase 4 (Connection): you match, message, and meet.

Is there swiping?

No. We recognize that attraction matters and is unavoidable, but we do not build the experience around it. datEQ does not reward arbitrary, hard-line filters like specific income, height, or weight thresholds. Attraction is felt in ranges, not checkboxes, and our matching reflects that.

Why is there an interview? Isn't the assessment enough?

Self-assessments are helpful, but they don't always capture the full picture. The interview adds depth by allowing us to better understand how you think, communicate, and reflect on past experiences. It also helps ensure profiles are accurate and consistent, which improves the overall quality of matches.

Is this therapy?

No. datEQ is not therapy and does not provide mental health treatment. The interview is structured and focused specifically on understanding relationship patterns for matching purposes. While it is guided by a trained professional, it is not a clinical service or ongoing therapeutic relationship.

How long does the process take?

Self-assessment: about 20–30 minutes. Interview: about 1 to 1.5 hours. After your assessment, we will reach out within 5 business days to schedule the interview.

What kind of things are you evaluating?

We look at a range of relationship-relevant factors, including communication style, emotional awareness and regulation, attachment tendencies, conflict and repair approach, and accountability and self-reflection. These are used to better understand compatibility between users.

Will I have ongoing access to a therapist?

No. The interview is part of onboarding, not an ongoing service. The goal is to ensure accurate matching from the start, not to provide continuous guidance or therapy.

If a profile is not a fit at this time, you will receive a written overview from our therapists detailing the growth areas they would want to see addressed before reassessment, along with a recommended timeframe to reapply. This is not a judgment — it is a reflection of alignment with the platform's current matching framework.

What if there aren't many people in my area?

We are launching in NYC first to establish a strong foothold, with rapid expansion to additional metros to follow. Early users in less populous areas benefit from discounted entry pricing while the network grows in their region — by the time you are ready to match, the pool will be meaningfully larger.

Yes. Your information is kept confidential and used solely for the purpose of improving match quality and platform experience. We do not share your personal responses with other users.

Will I get fewer matches because of this process?
